Understanding Leadership Empty Re: Understanding Leadership

Post by apple lim Sat Oct 31, 2015 6:44 pm

Sir, the question of what are the qualities required to be a good leader can i write this sentences??

What are the qualities required to be a good leader?
I have my own thoughts about what people should do if they hope to be a good leader. Obviously, some leadership qualities can’t be simply switched on, no matter how hard you try – you can’t suddenly decide to become charismatic or confident, for example – but there are certain behaviour that are a matter of choice.

First is listening – We have two ears and one mouth. They’re in that ratio for a reason. Listen to what people have to say and, by “listen” I don’t just mean that you should keep your mouth shut until they finish talking. I mean that you should pay attention to what they’re telling you and give it due consideration – don’t just ignore it or dismiss it out of hand. If it’s important enough for them to speak to you about it, then it’s important enough for you to give some thought to. If people think you don’t listen to them, they’ll conclude that you don’t care about their problems and they stop coming to you. Not only do you risk losing their respect and incurring their resentment, but you may also find that problems fester and grow much larger than they would have had they been nipped in the bud. Also, be aware that some people have difficulty telling truth to authority, so never do anything that could discourage anyone from telling you the truth, even if it’s bad news.

Second is be fair - Good leaders don’t have favourites. They treat everyone equally and apply the same standards across the board. If you start treating different members of your team differently, it can lead to resentment and dis function within the team. Be aware that unfairness often stems from emotion. If something happens that makes you angry, don’t react immediately. Give yourself a time out to calm down and think before reacting in a considered and measured manner.

Good start. The answer is good. You have mentioned 2 points. Look for more. Listening and paying attention to what others are saying is the first quality every leader should have. Only then will he or she be able to understand the situation better and be better able to deal with it.

Understanding Leadership Empty Re: Understanding Leadership

Post by yinxin Mon Nov 02, 2015 10:01 am

Sir,this definition correct or not??
"Leadership is simply causing other people to do what the leaders want. Good leadership, whether formal or informal, is helping other people rise to their full potential while accomplishing the mission and goals of the organization. All members of an organization who are responsible for the work of others have the potential to be good leaders, if properly developed.

Leadership is employing your skills and knowledge, leveraged by your attitude to get the results you desire.

"Leadership is having a vision, sharing that vision and inspiring others to support your vision while creating their own.

Important of Leadership Skills
Commitment, resolve and perseverance – driving every aspect of the organization toward a singular unified purpose.

Risk-taking – breaking conventions and developing new products and services to establish marketplace dominance (and possibly even create a unique market).

Planning – though a leader typically doesn’t get too involved in the details, he or she must orchestrate a high-level plan that drives everyone toward the unified goal.

Motivating – an effective leader must be able to encourage contributions from the entire organization, navigating the specific motivators of each individual or group to push the right buttons and inspire employees at every level to achieve not only their personal best but the best for the organization as a whole.

Communication skills that rely on active listening – far more than just being able to speak and write persuasively, leadership communication skills incite others to work toward the stated goal in line with the path the leader has chosen.

Possessing or obtaining the skills required to successfully achieve business goals – bringing a unique knowledge set to the table or acquiring it personally or through employees and other subordinates.

Understanding Leadership Empty What can you understand by leadership?

Post by terenn wong Mon Nov 02, 2015 11:02 am

Leadership requires ambition. "Leaders are described with a mouthful of adjectives, such as passionate, visionary, charismatic, motivational and encouraging. However, I propose leadership is something simpler. It is ambition. Ambition creates hard work, determination and an unconditional desire to achieve. It generates an absolutely contagious energy that people follow and join naturally. If you are a leader in your organization, there is only one thing you need to understand about your role: never let your ambition fade."

Good leaders have a good attitude. "A good leader can hold his or her emotions in check, especially in tough situations. For example, maybe you lost your best client, or a deal you've been working on falls through. Regardless, it's important for leaders to guide a team through challenging times, encouraging them and remaining positive along the way. Team morale is heavily contingent upon a leader's attitude."

Leadership means being in touch with your people. "A leader places the people around him or her in a position that sets them up for success. This is a difficult task because a leader must have an in-depth understanding of each individual, such as understanding their career goals and knowing what motivates them. By being committed to helping each person achieve their own personal goals, the leader sets the organization up for greatness. Leaders are [also] good listeners. They listen to verbal and nonverbal cues to understand [what is] occurring in the organization. This allows you to address problems before they become big issues."

Leaders set the right example. "Leadership is setting an example in the way you act each day, while focusing on the bigger picture. It's about setting the tone for your team and organization in the way you interact with your own staff, your business partners and your customers. As a leader, it is your responsibility to establish goals, innovate, motivate and trust. A passionate and compassionate leader can energize a company. Set an example of cooperation, trust and openness. Focus on solutions and positivity instead of finding faults and blame for actions."

Leaders can't stand alone. "The out-and-out leader in today's volatile and uncertain business environment had better not distance him or herself from the heat of the action. Demonstrating the competence to assess, decide and execute in a growing business drives confidence in the leader. Similarly, a great leader of an enterprise stands on the shoulders not of 'managerial Muppets' who obediently do as they are directed but of other leadership giants who have different and complementary leadership skills. A business with only one leader will remain forever a small business."

Understanding Leadership Empty What are the qualities required to be a good leader?

Post by Erik Mon Nov 02, 2015 11:03 am

This is my opinion for:

The qualities required for the good leader.

1) A good leader should be able to convince someone.
- A good leader should have a good convince skill to let them follow your command.

2) A good leader should be more confidence.
- Confidence is important for a leader because the followers will increase their trust to a confidence leader.

Understanding Leadership Empty Re: Understanding Leadership

Post by peiying Mon Nov 02, 2015 12:45 pm

A.)What can you understand by leadership?
1. The individuals who are the leaders in an organization, regarded collectively.
2. The activity of leading a group of people or an organization or the ability to do this.
Leadership involves:
1. establishing a clear vision,
2. sharing that vision with others so that they will follow willingly,
3. providing the information, knowledge and methods to realize that vision, and
4. Coordinating and balancing the conflicting interests of all members and stakeholders.

A leader steps up in times of crisis, and is able to think and act creatively in difficult situations. Unlike management, leadership cannot be taught, although it may be learned and enhanced through coaching or mentoring. Someone with great leadership skills today is Bill Gates who, despite early failures, with continued passion and innovation has driven Microsoft and the software industry to success.
3. The act of inspiring subordinates to perform and engage in achieving a goal.

B.)Why is leadership important?
Leadership development is vital because organizations take on the personality of their leaders. Leadership training and development can maximize productivity, shape a positive culture and promote harmony. To achieve this, key people must lead individuals and teams using an appropriate leadership style.
Leadership skills and how they can help you?
Leadership is never easy. No matter how effortlessly some leaders appear to manage, the path of a leader is one fraught with constant challenge and surprise. However, the leader does not face the challenge alone. By definition, a leader has a group or organization working to meet each challenge and achieve each goal. The leader's job is not to solve every problem alone, but to inspire those he or she leads to solve the problems. Good leaders recognize that they do not have all the answers and are constantly re-educating themselves on their businesses and sharpening their leadership skills. Beyond personal qualities such as vision and positive thought, a leader must also take careful steps to communicate with his or her staff in the best way possible. Formerly rare processes such as goal-setting, constant feedback, and a system of rewards are now the norm in most workplaces. Some of the most important lessons of this book concentrate on your interactions with your group as a team, but also as individuals.

C.) What are the qualities required to be a good leader?
A good leader has an exemplary character. It is of utmost importance that a leader is trustworthy to lead others. A leader needs to be trusted and be known to live their life with honestly and integrity. A good leader “walks the talk” and in doing so earns the right to have responsibility for others. True authority is born from respect for the good character and trustworthiness of the person who leads. A good leader is enthusiastic about their work or cause and also about their role as leader. People will respond more openly to a person of passion and dedication. Leaders need to be able to be a source of inspiration, and be a motivator towards the required action or cause. Although the responsibilities and roles of a leader may be different, the leader needs to be seen to be part of the team working towards the goal. This kind of leader will not be afraid to roll up their sleeves and get dirty. A good leader is confident. In order to lead and set direction a leader needs to appear confident as a person and in the leadership role. Such a person inspires confidence in others and draws out the trust and best efforts of the team to complete the task well. A leader who conveys confidence towards the proposed objective inspires the best effort from team members. A leader also needs to function in an orderly and purposeful manner in situations of uncertainty. People look to the leader during times of uncertainty and unfamiliarity and find reassurance and security when the leader portrays confidence and a positive demeanour.

D)Give some examples of great leaders
The first of these is being flexible. Not everything goes as planned. Competitors change tactics, governments force new regulations on business, strikes stop the flow of products, and, occasionally, natural disasters occur. And at times like these, leaders have to be able to change course; that is, first make sure their businesses will survive, and then find a new way to reach their goals.
The second characteristic is being able to communicate. Some leaders are great orators, but speaking well isn’t all that’s required of a leader. As we all know, there are lots of people who talk a great game but deliver nothing. Leaders who communicate well are those who not only share their thoughts with employees, but also let their strength and personal character show through in their communication, and empower those who work for them by defining the company’s goal and showing how to get there.
A third characteristic of great leaders—or, perhaps, group of characteristics—is having courage, tenacity, and patience. Having the courage to stand alone, the tenacity to not succumb to pressure, and the patience to keep fighting until you win the day—and sometimes being able to do all three at the same time—is something you will have to develop if you want to be a true and successful leader.
The fourth necessary characteristic is the combination of humility and presence. Acting aloof, or above your employees, does not make a leader. Leaders have to be able to talk and listen to their employees on all levels of the company. At the same time, they must have the respect of their employees, the kind of respect that’s earned by being honest, having integrity, and being tough but fair.
The fifth and final characteristic of a successful leader is being responsible. A business owner has to realize that, as the saying goes, "A skunk stinks from the head down," and a business does too. This means when there is blame to be accepted, the owner must be the first one to accept it. But it also means that when accolades are appropriate, they should be spread out among the employees. And when this happens, a leader is born.

The 1st and 3rd definition are good. The second definition is limited so not very suitable. Under "the importance of leadership skills" heading, you have brought out the following points:

Commitment, resolve and perseverance
Risk taking
Planning
Motivating
and communication skills

These are important points to take note in a leader. Good. Try to understand these words and what they stand for.

Expand on these and you can get many points for your essay

Ambition. A good quality if used for the benefit of everyone but not good if used only for the benefit of only one person. A good leader is ambitious in a good way.

You have mentioned the following points:

good attitude
in touch with your people
set the right example
leaders can't stand alone

Very good points. Work on these and you can have a good essay. Look for more points.

I have made some gramatical corrections. You have not copied from anywhere but have tried on your own. Good. The skills you have mentioned as follows:

Convincing skills
Confidence

are important in a leader. You should expand on your points and look for more points to build your essay.

Vision. A person without without a vision can never be a leader. This is a good point. The leader should be able to share this vision with others.
"Unlike management, leadership cannot be taught" Good.
Point B is good. "Why is leadership important"
C is also good especially the word "trustworthy". Trustworthiness is the king of all virtues. A trustworthy person can be depended on at all times.
Point D is wrong answer. Examples here means the names of great leaders such as Mother Therese, Lao Tze and others. Explain about them.
Good effort.

What can you understand by leadership?
• Leaders help themselves and others to do the right things. They set direction, build an inspiring vision, and create something new. Leadership is about mapping out where you need to go to "win" as a team or an organization; and it is dynamic, exciting, and inspiring.
Yet, while leaders set the direction, they must also use management skills to guide their people to the right destination, in a smooth and efficient way.
In this article, we'll focus on the process of leadership. In particular, we'll discuss the "transformational leadership" model, first proposed by James MacGregor Burns and then developed by Bernard Bass. This model highlights visionary thinking and bringing about change, instead of management processes that are designed to maintain and steadily improve current performance.

What is the best definition you can find?
• The ability of a company's management to make sound decisions and inspire others to perform well. Effective leaders are able to set and achieve challenging goals, to take swift and decisive action even in difficult situations, to outperform their competition, to take calculated risks and to persevere in the face of failure. Strong communication skills, self-confidence, the ability to manage others and a willingness to embrace change also characterize good leaders.

Why is leadership important?
• Leadership development is vital because organizations take on the personality of their leaders. Leadership training and development can maximize productivity, shape a positive culture and promote harmony. To achieve this, key people must lead individuals and teams using an appropriate leadership style.

What are the qualities required to be a good leader?
• Honesty
• Ability to Delegate
• Communication
• Confidence
• Commitment
• Positive Attitude
• Creativity

Understanding Leadership Empty Example of great leaders

Post by Erik Tue Nov 03, 2015 12:05 pm

There are some great leaders have inspired me:

1) Julius Caesar
Julius Caesar was a Roman military commander and a genius, to say the very least. He played a critical role in the death of a Roman Republic and the rise of the strong Roman Empire. He was not only quick and smart on the battlefield but he also devised great strategies and plan for the expansion of the empire and his political finesse, with the help of which he conquered almost all of Western Europe. His decisiveness, abilities to out-wit his opponents made it possible for him to gain a strong following. He was eventually assassinated by his friend Brutus. The famous Shakespearean tragedy ‘Julius Caesar’ is based on his life.

2) George Washington
The Founding father of The United States Of America, George Washington, is till date one of the greatest leaders that we have ever seen. He led the American Revolution and later, led USA into the first few years of it’s independence as the First President of USA. He was a visionary and he had immense vision for America which has led America to become the super power it is today. His tenacity, steadfastness, his ability to make decisions during difficult times made him a great leader and he led many people to success.

3) Abraham Lincoln
It takes a man with a vision to lead a country during it’s bad times. Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of USA, led the country through the US Civil War. He strived hard and did his best to keep the people of the country together or else, today, America would have been many smaller countries instead of one big country. He signed the Emancipation Proclamation, thereby ending slavery in US. He heart ached for the ones for whom he could do not do anything. His conviction, humility, oratory skills made him one of the greatest leaders we have ever had.

4) Martin Luther King Jr.
It all started with a dream, like it always does. A dream for change and a dream for better tomorrow. Martin Luther King Jr. was an activist and a leader in the civil rights movement of USA. He was also a member of the clergy. He is known for the non-violent ways in which he advanced and led the civil rights movement. He fought for racial equality and showed the people a picture of a better future where all men are equal. Courage, perseverance and the will to fight for whats right till the very end made him a great leader. He won The Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

Understanding Leadership Empty factors that influence choice of leadership style

Post by apple lim Wed Nov 04, 2015 11:06 am

Factors that influence choice of leadership style

Identify factors that will influence your choice of leadership styles and explain why your leadership styles are likely to positively affect your team

In today's business world, leadership is more important than ever and while organizations have focused on identifying leadership competencies as a means of gaining competitive advantage, the quality of leadership is still a concern.

Typically organizations identify a number of leadership competencies of behaviours that are important to leading the business effectively. Naturally with any developmental experience offered, the organization would like to see its leaders improve in as many competencies as possible. This is where the enhancement of Emotional Intelligence skills can provide significant leverage and value.

While leaders may well consider themselves to be just human beings, or another cog in the great organisational machine, this is not how their team members see them. For them, the leader is the organisation, and they are looking for answers as to what the organisation is about.

The most known leadership styles are as follow - autocratic, democratic and bureaucratic. In my opinion the most effective is democratic, although in some situation the best solution is autocratic.

Leaders using autocratic leadership style don't give a chance for their subordinates to express their ideas or disagree with the leaders' opinion and vision. As a result of fact the team become a group of people just mechanically implementing the leader's instructions what is good only for emergency situation. While emergency no time for disputes and asking for suggestion, the decision should be accepted immediately and autocratic style is a brilliant for that type of situation to lead people.

Democratic style of leadership is more fruitful and promotes the sharing of responsibility. Such a techniques as consultation, effective delegation of tasks, encourage becoming a leader and being involved in leadership development determined my choice.

So the main factors that influence to my choice of leadership are positive work environment where junior employees are given a possibility to challenge themselves, successful initiatives when the process of consultation and feedback naturally results in better decision making and more effective operations. The next factor is encouragement of creative thinking, because creative thinking is required to solve problems in every single organisation, whatever it's nature.

Reduced employee turnover is the last of the factors. When employees feel empowered through leadership development, a company will experience lower rates of employee turnover which has numerous benefits.

Further I try briefly state why democratic leadership styles are likely have a positive effect of individual and group behaviour.

Democratic leadership is allowing employees to give their ideas on how processes become leaner and more efficient and effective in organisations where training, professional & leadership development and quality of work performed are very appreciated. Organisations are benefit from drawing upon the creative energies of all their staff to bring about cost cutting techniques or fund raising ideas, from the free flow of ideas that democratic leadership brings.

Review of own leadership behaviour

Assess your own leadership behaviours and potential by referring to a relevant leadership model, your organisation's working practises, and by collecting feedback from others.

Describe what actions you could take to improve as a leader

Most people are naturally anxious about change and it doesn't take a lot for the pessimist in all of us to emerge. The individual's response to change is heavily influenced by the response of the people round about them, and key among those influences is the reaction of the leader. If the leader displays a negative reaction then so too do many members of the team. The leader needs to be aware of the impact that their behaviour has on other people. The leader's own behaviour is then a key influence on the outcome of the change process and the leader needs to behave appropriately, if the change is to be managed successfully.

Ability to communicate is to be ready to answer to the questions such as "Why are we doing this?", "What do we do?", "How do we do it?" in the new world. Communication is a two way process. Instant answers are not good in new world better to discuss and to gradually understand what will be required of from the team in the future. Change leadership is enhanced when leaders communicate a little at a time, as often as possible, in as many different ways as possible, and providing as many different perspectives as possible. Once team members have built their own personal model of the future and have checked it out against the reality of what is happening on the ground, so that they can once again begin to make their own decisions, the communication process will have served its purpose.

For the second leadership behaviors is ability to support the members of the team. Support in this context is very much about the individual. Leader need to make time available for each individual, need to make himself accessible and need to be prepared to listen. Answers can come in due time, but the leader needs to provide active support to each individual.

Understanding Leadership Empty Factors that influence choice of leadership style

Post by apple lim Wed Nov 04, 2015 11:09 am

The next of the leadership behaviours is independence. Leaders need to retain a degree of independence from members of the team all of the time, but at a time of change it becomes even more crucial. Leader have to be able to make the correct decisions, and even begin"disciplinary process" if some team members refuse to respond appropriately to a new environment. If they don't deal with an individual who is being obstructive, they risk alienating others who respond appropriately. Independence is also important to separate the leader's behaviour towards the team from the way that the leader behaves as an individual.

The next step of the leadership behaviours is the ability to develop others. At a time of change everyone has to learn to do things differently. A good leader is working with their team to help them discover first of all what they need to be able to do, and secondly to learn how to do it. Coaching will probably be a key activity at this time. By helping team members to achieve new skills the leader not only enables the team to do its work, but increases the confidence of the team member and reduces any concern about the change stemming from their ability to learn new skills.

Leadership style is how you relate to subordinates. Assessing my way of leadership I came to solution that mostly I use democratic leadership style behaviour to motivate employees to work harder, involve employees for more participation in the decision-making process. Opinion of personnel is much appreciated and leads them to be motivated especially when their ideas were used in the work processes. As a result work environment become healthy and employees feel good about it. A Workers feel that their opinion counts, and because of that feeling they are more committed to achieving the goals and objectives of the organization. The collaborative environment created by this style often results in more thorough solutions to problems. I realize that sometime the democratic style could be no effective as take time when I ask people about their opinion, while they explaining what they think and other understand what they are saying. Efficiency is in right assessment of the knowledge and experience of subordinates. If they are not quite qualified this will be just waste of the time.

So when is situation critic and I need to make urgent decision I switch the style.

Even the most successful team will need help from its leader when faced with major change in its environment. For change leadership to be successful, certain leadership behaviours need to be used more regularly until the team has taken the impact of the change on board, and has learned how to be successful in the new environment

Understanding Leadership Empty Why is leadership important?

Post by terenn wong Wed Nov 04, 2015 9:35 pm

Leadership is important for making an organisation successful. Leadership transforms potential into reality. Secondly, leadership aids authority. There are limits to the use of authority in obtaining high performance among subordinates. Authority alone cannot generate a favorable attitude for improved performance. Because of its main reliance on influence, leadership is essential for obtaining successful work accomplishment. Thirdly, if management fails to provide able leadership, informal leadership will develop which will eventually regulate the behavior of the employees and may come into conflict with managerial leadership. If management cannot provide leadership, people will be forced to rely on informal leadership. Lastly, management is transformed into a social process through leadership action. It is the social skill of leadership which accomplishes organisational goals by utilizing the potential of the people.

Understanding Leadership Empty What are the qualities required to be a good leader?

Post by terenn wong Wed Nov 04, 2015 9:56 pm

- Honesty
Whatever ethical plane you hold yourself to, when you are responsible for a team of people, its important to raise the bar even higher. Your business and its employees are a reflection of yourself, and if you make honest and ethical behavior a key value, your team will follow suit.

- Ability to Delegate
Finessing your brand vision is essential to creating an organized and efficient business, but if you don’t learn to trust your team with that vision, you might never progress to the next stage. Its important to remember that trusting your team with your idea is a sign of strength, not weakness. Delegating tasks to the appropriate departments is one of the most important skills you can develop as your business grows. The emails and tasks will begin to pile up, and the more you stretch yourself thin, the lower the quality of your work will become, and the less you will produce. The key to delegation is identifying the strengths of your team, and capitalizing on them. Find out what each team member enjoys doing most. Chances are if they find that task more enjoyable, they will likely put more thought and effort behind it. This will not only prove to your team that you trust and believe in them, but will also free up your time to focus on the higher level tasks, that should not be delegated. It’s a fine balance, but one that will have a huge impact on the productivity of your business.

- Communication
Knowing what you want accomplished may seem clear in your head, but if you try to explain it to someone else and are met with a blank expression, you know there is a problem. If this has been your experience, then you may want to focus on honing your communication skills. Being able to clearly and succinctly describe what you want done is extremely important. If you can’t relate your vision to your team, you won’t all be working towards the same goal. Training new members and creating a productive work environment all depend on healthy lines of communication. Whether that stems from an open door policy to your office, or making it a point to talk to your staff on a daily basis, making yourself available to discuss interoffice issues is vital. Your team will learn to trust and depend on you, and will be less hesitant to work harder.

- Confidence
There may be days where the future of your brand is worrisome and things aren’t going according to plan. This is true with any business, large or small, and the most important thing is not to panic. Part of your job as a leader is to put out fires and maintain the team morale. Keep up your confidence level, and assure everyone that setbacks are natural and the important thing is to focus on the larger goal. As the leader, by staying calm and confident, you will help keep the team feeling the same. Remember, your team will take cues from you, so if you exude a level of calm damage control, your team will pick up on that feeling. The key objective is to keep everyone working and moving ahead.

- Commitment
If you expect your team to work hard and produce quality content, you’re going to need to lead by example. There is no greater motivation than seeing the boss down in the trenches working alongside everyone else, showing that hard work is being done on every level. By proving your commitment to the brand and your role, you will not only earn the respect of your team, but will also instill that same hardworking energy among your staff. It’s important to show your commitment not only to the work at hand, but also to your promises. If you pledged to host a holiday party, or uphold summer Fridays, keep your word. You want to create a reputation for not just working hard, but also be known as a fair leader. Once you have gained the respect of your team, they are more likely to deliver the peak amount of quality work possible.

- Positive Attitude
You want to keep your team motivated towards the continued success of the company, and keep the energy levels up. Whether that means providing snacks, coffee, relationship advice, or even just an occasional beer in the office, remember that everyone on your team is a person. Keep the office mood a fine balance between productivity and playfulness. f your team is feeling happy and upbeat, chances are they won’t mind staying that extra hour to finish a report, or devoting their best work to the brand.

- Creativity
Some decisions will not always be so clear-cut. You may be forced at times to deviate from your set course and make an on the fly decision. This is where your creativity will prove to be vital. It is during these critical situations that your team will look to you for guidance and you may be forced to make a quick decision. As a leader, its important to learn to think outside the box and to choose which of two bad choices is the best option. Don’t immediately choose the first or easiest possibility; sometimes its best to give these issues some thought, and even turn to your team for guidance. By utilizing all possible options before making a rash decision, you can typically reach the end conclusion you were aiming for.

- Intuition
When leading a team through uncharted waters, there is no road map on what to do. Everything is uncertain, and the higher the risk, the higher the pressure. That is where your natural intuition has to kick in. Guiding your team through the process of your day-to-day tasks can be honed down to a science. But when something unexpected occurs, or you are thrown into a new scenario, your team will look to you for guidance. Drawing on past experience is a good reflex, as is reaching out to your mentors for support. Eventually though, the tough decisions will be up to you to decide and you will need to depend on your gut instinct for answers. Learning to trust yourself is as important as your team learning to trust you.

- Ability to Inspire
Creating a business often involves a bit of forecasting. Especially in the beginning stages of a startup, inspiring your team to see the vision of the successes to come is vital. Make your team feel invested in the accomplishments of the company. Whether everyone owns a piece of equity, or you operate on a bonus system, generating enthusiasm for the hard work you are all putting in is so important. Being able to inspire your team is great for focusing on the future goals, but it is also important for the current issues. When you are all mired deep in work, morale is low, and energy levels are fading, recognize that everyone needs a break now and then. Acknowledge the work that everyone has dedicated and commend the team on each of their efforts. It is your job to keep spirits up, and that begins with an appreciation for the hard work.

Give some examples of great leaders
- Angela Merkel (Chancellor, Germany)
- Alan Mulally (CEO, Ford Motor Co.)
- Warren Buffett (CEO, Berkshire Hathaway)

Has any leader inspired you?
Yes, the leader that has inspired me is Howard Schultz, the CEO of Starbucks. A small Seattle coffee retailer has become 20,000 shops worldwide under Schultz's leadership with many more planned. Crucially, he understood that he was creating an experience, not selling a product. Far ahead of most CEOs, he saw the value of offering medical insurance to all employees, even part-timers, and pursuing environmental and social projects that inspire employees and attract customers.

Understanding Leadership
1. What can you understand by leadership?
“Leadership” is a position as a leader of a group or organization. Leaders help themselves and others to do the right things.
According to the idea of transformational leadership Add to My Personal Learning Plan, an effective leader is a person who does the following:

Creates an inspiring vision of the future.
Motivates and inspires people to engage with that vision.
Manages delivery of the vision.
Coaches and builds a team, so that it is more effective at achieving the vision.
Leadership brings together the skills needed to do these things. We'll look at each element in more detail.

1. Creating an Inspiring Vision of the Future

In business, a vision is a realistic, convincing and attractive depiction of where you want to be in the future. Vision provides direction, sets priorities, and provides a marker, so that you can tell that you've achieved what you wanted to achieve.

To create a vision, leaders focus on an organization's strengths by using tools such as Porter's Five Forces Add to My Personal Learning Plan, PEST Analysis Add to My Personal Learning Plan, USP Analysis Add to My Personal Learning Plan, Core Competence Analysis Add to My Personal Learning Plan and SWOT Analysis Add to My Personal Learning Plan to analyze their current situation. They think about how their industry is likely to evolve, and how their competitors are likely to behave. They look at how they can innovate successfully Add to My Personal Learning Plan, and shape their businesses and their strategies to succeed in future marketplaces. And they test their visions with appropriate market research, and by assessing key risks using techniques such as Scenario Analysis Add to My Personal Learning Plan.

Therefore, leadership is proactive – problem solving, looking ahead, and not being satisfied with things as they are.

Once they have developed their visions, leaders must make them compelling and convincing. A compelling vision Add to My Personal Learning Plan is one that people can see, feel, understand, and embrace. Effective leaders provide a rich picture of what the future will look like when their visions have been realized. They tell inspiring stories Add to My Personal Learning Plan, and explain their visions in ways that everyone can relate to.

Here, leadership combines the analytical side of vision creation with the passion of shared values, creating something really meaningful to the people being led.

2. Motivating and Inspiring People

A compelling vision provides the foundation for leadership. But it's leaders' ability to motivate and inspire people that helps them deliver that vision.

For example, when you start a new project, you will probably have lots of enthusiasm for it, so it's often easy to win support for the project at the beginning. However, it can be difficult to find ways to keep your vision inspiring after the initial enthusiasm fades, especially if the team or organization needs to make significant changes in the way that they do things. Leaders recognize this, and they work hard throughout the project to connect their vision with people's individual needs, goals, and aspirations.

One of the key ways they do this is through Expectancy Theory Add to My Personal Learning Plan. Effective leaders link together two different expectations:

The expectation that hard work leads to good results.
The expectation that good results lead to attractive rewards or incentives.
This motivates people to work hard to achieve success, because they expect to enjoy rewards – both intrinsic and extrinsic – as a result.

Other approaches include restating the vision in terms of the benefits it will bring to the team's customers, and taking frequent opportunities to communicate the vision in an attractive and engaging way.

What's particularly helpful here is where leaders have expert power Add to My Personal Learning Plan. People admire and believe in these leaders because they are expert in what they do. They have credibility, and they've earned the right to ask people to listen to them and follow them. This makes it much easier for these leaders to motivate and inspire the people they lead.

Leaders can also motivate and influence people through their natural charisma and appeal, and through other sources of power Add to My Personal Learning Plan, such as the power to pay bonuses or assign tasks to people. However, good leaders don't rely too much on these types of power to motivate and inspire others.

3. Managing Delivery of the Vision

This is the area of leadership that relates to management Add to My Personal Learning Plan.
Leaders must ensure that the work needed to deliver the vision is properly managed – either by themselves, or by a dedicated manager or team of managers to whom the leader delegates this responsibility – and they need to ensure that their vision is delivered successfully.

To do this, team members need performance goals that are linked to the team's overall vision. Our article on Performance Management and KPIs Add to My Personal Learning Plan (Key Performance Indicators) explains one way of doing this, and our Project Management section explains another. And, for day-to-day management of delivering the vision, the Management By Wandering Around Add to My Personal Learning Plan (MBWA) approach helps to ensure that what should happen, really happens.

Leaders also need to make sure they manage change Add to My Personal Learning Plan effectively. This helps to ensure that the changes needed to deliver the vision are implemented smoothly and thoroughly, with the support and backing of the people affected.

4. Coaching and Building a Team to Achieve the Vision

Individual and team development are important activities carried out by transformational leaders. To develop a team, leaders must first understand team dynamics. Several well-established and popular models describe this, such as Belbin's Team Roles Add to My Personal Learning Plan approach, and Bruce Tuckman's Forming, Storming, Norming, and Performing theory Add to My Personal Learning Plan.

A leader will then ensure that team members have the necessary skills and abilities to do their job and achieve the vision. They do this by giving and receiving feedback Add to My Personal Learning Plan regularly, and by training and coaching Add to My Personal Learning Plan people to improve individual and team performance.

Leadership also includes looking for leadership potential Add to My Personal Learning Plan in others. By developing leadership skills within your team, you create an environment where you can continue success in the long term. And that's a true measure of great leadership.

2. What is the best definition you can find?
Leader is a man who can persuade people to do what they don’t want to do, or do what they’re too lazy to do.

3. Why is leadership important?
In a competitive business environment, effective leadership is an essential requirement in order to achieve organisational goals. To do this, leaders must be able to provide inspiration, motivation and clear direction to their team.
For any type or size of business, effective leadership provides many benefits and will assist the organisation to achieve success and stability. In the absence of effective leadership, organisations often grow slowly and may lose their direction and competitiveness. Some of the ways in which leadership can benefit a business include:
• A clear vision: setting a clear vision and communicating it effectively provides employees with an understanding of the organisational direction and allows them to clearly understand their roles and responsibilities.
• Effective planning: a structured approach is able to generate a plan of action that will most effectively meet the organisational goals. An inclusive planning process also provides the opportunity for people to identify, contribute to, understand and achieve well defined objectives.
• Inspiration and motivation: the commitment and enthusiasm of a business leader shapes the common goals of the organisation and provides inspiration and motivation for people to perform at a high level.
• New ideas: encouragement of people to openly contribute and discuss new ideas in a positive environment makes use of their diverse experience and ideas to improve a business.
• Employee relations: an open and engaging relationship between a leader and their team members demonstrates that they are valued as an integral part of the organisation, creating a sense of ownership among team members and developing a closer alignment between individual and team objectives.
• Crisis management: Good business leadership can help a team remain focused during a time of crisis, reminding the team members of their achievements and encourage them to set short term, achievable goals.
These are just some of the ways in which good leadership can have a positive impact on your business. Understanding these skills and applying the strategies will help you to become a better leader and could potentially make your business more successful.

4. What are the qualities required to be a good leader?

Having a great idea, and assembling a team to bring that concept to life is the first step in creating a successful business venture. While finding a new and unique idea is rare enough; the ability to successfully execute this idea is what separates the dreamers from the entrepreneurs. However you see yourself, whatever your age may be, as soon as you make that exciting first hire, you have taken the first steps in becoming a powerful leader. When money is tight, stress levels are high, and the visions of instant success don’t happen like you thought, it’s easy to let those emotions get to you, and thereby your team. Take a breath, calm yourself down, and remind yourself of the leader you are and would like to become. Here are some key qualities that every good leader should possess, and learn to emphasize.
Honesty
Whatever ethical plane you hold yourself to, when you are responsible for a team of people, its important to raise the bar even higher. Your business and its employees are a reflection of yourself, and if you make honest and ethical behavior a key value, your team will follow suit.
As we do at Onevest, the crowdfunding platform for entrepreneurs and small businesses I co-founded, try to make a list of values and core beliefs that both you and your brand represent, and post this in your office. Promote a healthy interoffice lifestyle, and encourage your team to live up to these standards. By emphasizing these standards, and displaying them yourself, you will hopefully influence the office environment into a friendly and helpful workspace.
Ability to Delegate
This will not only prove to your team that you trust and believe in them, but will also free up your time to focus on the higher level tasks, that should not be delegated. It’s a fine balance, but one that will have a huge impact on the productivity of your business.
Communication
Knowing what you want accomplished may seem clear in your head, but if you try to explain it to someone else and are met with a blank expression, you know there is a problem. If this has been your experience, then you may want to focus on honing your communication skills. Being able to clearly and succinctly describe what you want done is extremely important. Positive Attitude
You want to keep your team motivated towards the continued success of the company, and keep the energy levels up. Whether that means providing snacks, coffee, relationship advice, or even just an occasional beer in the office, remember that everyone on your team is a person. 5. Give some examples of great leaders
Abraham Lincoln
It takes a man with a vision to lead a country during it’s bad times. Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of USA, led the country through the US Civil War. He strived hard and did his best to keep the people of the country together or else, today, America would have been many smaller countries instead of one big country. He signed the Emancipation Proclamation, thereby ending slavery in US. He heart ached for the ones for whom he could do not do anything. His conviction, humility, oratory skills made him one of the greatest leaders we have ever had.

Mao Zedong
We can see that some of the greatest leaders have spurted as the ones who leaded a change in a particular place. Mao Zedong, similarly, was the leader of the Chinese Revolution and the founder of People’s Republic of China, the China we see today. He withheld the Japanese invasion, kick-started the economy of China and helped it become the super-power it is today. His vision for China is what him and the people of China strived for. His ideologies and principles of governance and economics are now known as Maoism.

George Washington
The Founding father of The United States Of America, George Washington, is till date one of the greatest leaders that we have ever seen. He led the American Revolution and later, led USA into the first few years of it’s independence as the First President of USA. He was a visionary and he had immense vision for America which has led America to become the super power it is today. His tenacity, steadfastness, his ability to make decisions during difficult times made him a great leader and he led many people to success.

6. Has any leader inspired you?
